Advocate is an integral part of the court. It acts as a medium between the person or institution seeking justice and the judge. How many types of advocates are there in the Supreme Court and what do they do? If you want to understand this also, then definitely read this article till the end.

What is an Advocate?
An advocate is a professional person in the field of law who is authorized to appear in a case on behalf of a party. He holds a law degree and is nominated by the Bar Council. Now this question may come in your mind that what is this Bar Council? So let’s understand that too.
Bar Council
The Bar Council is a statutory body constituted under the Advocates Act 1961. What does this do? It is a regulatory agency that regulates legal education and legal practice across India. Whoever practices law in India is controlled by the Bar Council. All lawyers have to work only by staying under the guidelines, rules, statutes etc. set by the Bar Council. Each state has its own Bar Council and the Bar Council of India heads them all.
Apart from this also its many functions which have been described in section 7 of the Advocates Act 1961. Such as (1) protecting the rights, privileges and interests of advocates, (2) promoting legal education and meeting the standards of legal education, (3) taking disciplinary action, etc.
So overall advocates are those people who practice law and represent their clients in court and provide him/her legal advice. Now let’s talk about what type of advocate works in the Supreme Court.

Advocates of Supreme Court of India
The advocates working in the Supreme Court are divided into the following three categories.
1. Senior Advocate of Supreme Court –
These are the advocates who are recognized as senior advocates by the Supreme Court. The court can appoint any such advocate who is a well-known jurist in his eyes, well versed in legal matters, has special knowledge of the constitution and has membership of the bar, with his consent, appoint as senior advocate.
The thing to remember here is that the Senior Advocate, (1) cannot appear in the arguments without the Advocate on Record. (2) May not appear in any subordinate court or tribunal without a junior. (3) cannot file Vakalatnama. (4) Cannot accept direct appearance in any case or draft petition. Provided that this prohibition does not relate to the settlement of any such matter in consultation with a junior.
2. Advocate on record –
Only such an advocate can present any kind of record before the Supreme Court and file an appeal. They can also appear before the Supreme Court on behalf of any party. Such lawyers have minimum 5 years of experience and have to clear a special examination conducted by the Supreme Court. After this he gets a special number of Advocate on Record.
Such advocate can file an appearance or act for his client in the Supreme Court. He has the power to fill Vakalatnama and other important matters. Also, they have the power to represent their clients in the Supreme Court. No other type of advocate has such privileges.
3. Other advocate of the Supreme Court –
These are the advocates whose name is registered in a State Bar Council under the Advocates Act 1961. They can appear and argue on behalf of any party before the Supreme Court. But they do not have the right to file any document or case in the Supreme Court.

Intellectual Property Advocate – This type of lawyer specializes in intellectual laws, handling matters like copyright issues, trademarks and patents.
Personal Injury Lawyer – This type of lawyer specializes in matters like accident and its compensation (compensation from insurance companies, compensation received by the government or compensation from the one who is responsible for this accident).
Family Lawyer – They specialize in family based matters including divorce, custody etc. Some lawyers who focus only on divorce cases are called Divorce Specialists. Most family lawyers deal with all family related issues. They help in resolving the issue of family based property. They act as mediators in division issues, advising clients, documenting assets, etc.
Employment Lawyer – This type of lawyer deals with issues like employment and labour.
Immigration Lawyer – This type of lawyer specializes in dealing with issues related to visa, passport, and other immigration issues. A person who wants to settle abroad needs a lawyer of this type for consultation.
Criminal Lawyer – These lawyers are involved in criminal matters like theft, goons issues, abetment to murder, drug trafficking etc. These lawyers fight for criminals or against criminals in court.
Digital Media and Internet Lawyer – These lawyers handle digital media and internet related matters like legal issues related to website terms and conditions, piracy issues related to movies.
Medical Malpractice Lawyer – This type of lawyer helps in dealing with the mistakes made in the medical field on the part of doctors, nurses, pharmacists etc.
