For followers of these religions, yoga is not just a practice, but also a method that can be used to achieve enlightenment. This practice has existed for thousands of years and is mentioned in a number of important Indian texts such as the Upanishads and the Bhagavad Gita. 

Contemporary yoga incorporates a number of different principles, many of which are borrowed from Indian religions. The purpose of the gestures is to maintain health and fitness. 

Practitioners often chant and may also perform breathing techniques. Meditation plays an important role in yoga, and many western yoga institutes offer this practice in a way that can help those who do not practice Hinduism.

Those who practice Hinduism believe that yoga is close to God. Buddhists believe that yoga can help people reach a deeper level of wisdom. Western countries value individuality, so many people in the West use yoga as a means of self-improvement.

Yoga is a very ancient practice that focuses on total control of the mind and body. Many people who use it believe they can gain insight into the basic structure of reality. A yogi is one who attains the state of enlightenment, whose thoughts cease and attain some kind of unity. 

Yoga is a very complex subject that can mean different things to different people. Even if one does not want to achieve it, this exercise can allow the person to improve their eyesight. Although yoga has strong ties to Indian religions, it is not a religion per se. Although the exact age of the practice is unknown, it is estimated to be at least 6,000 years old.
